Dig more worms, please

The produce cooler door.

The bait box, right where it is supposed to be.

 Empty.

Ginnungagap

I have heard that Ginnungagap,

where the fire and ice meet,

is a place of dark, warm moisture.

And rain.

Lots of rain.

There was a cow, Audumla,

that licked the ice and rime with her rough warm tongue.

She licked Ymir, the giant, out of the ice.

And from Ymir’s body the world was created.

Nothing like that happened here, of course.

No worlds were created,

no seas, no skies, no stars, no trees, no grass.

There were no giants.

It just rained a lot

and a lot of wine was drunk

and secrets were told and forgotten.

Still, while the rain was falling

and the fire was hot and high,

it felt like a place of magical power

where startling things might emerge out of nothingness.

A Shameless Ploy To Make The Boys Like Me

The town dump. I swear. I found this book there. Amazing, right?

"These safe, exciting experiments for beginners were recently compiled by an international board of science experts as the UNESCO SOURCE BOOK FOR SCIENCE TEACHING. They are already being enjoyed by thousands of boys and girls throughout the world as adventures into the worlds of science and engineering."
I used this page to make a telegraph key using a rat trap for the key. It was a grand thing. We learned Morse code and wanted to string the wire out of the second floor window over to the playhouse loft, but we were short on wire, and when we almost burned down the school by getting some steel wool too close to the battery... well... it sort of knocked the wind out of our ambition.

I had to use this page to get the coil/circuit thing straight in my mind. When the key was functioning and we were sending Morse code between rooms, our biggest problem was power. Isn't that always the way? Someone suggested connecting it to a car battery, but in our discussion we determined that we would probably blow ourselves up if we did. I just can't remember how we arrived at that conclusion.

BeHeld

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love

Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love

The encouragement of light

How did the rose ever open its heart
and give to the world
all of its beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light
against its being.
Otherwise, we all remain too frightened.

Why there is no high peakage in my summer

June 2012

Emmons: more catching up

October 29, 2011 - almost a year ago

A 2 night backpacking trip with a friend to climb Emmons via Calkins Brook.

It was lovely autumn where we camped by the brook.

But as we climbed it got quite frosty.

The trail was icy enough that we put on our points and got out our poles.
 Done! 9 more to go.

Allen: high peak catch up

Slippery brown slime grows in the stream on the slide, which comprises about half of the 2 mile vertical, reached after the 7 mile approach hike.
Last July, 2011

Allen Mountain - an 18 mile round trip hike, very beautiful and very, very "'dackian."

10 more to go.

August camping 2012

When an idea comes to fruition,
sometimes the results can be bewildering.
